Richard Haines

I have always been a doodler. I'm that girl; bent over an old pay stub with a sharpie whilst waiting for the bus, filling in the margins of Hilroy stationary, scrawling on Post-Its and leaving them about the counters at work...

This year though (another added clause to my informal 2012 contract), I am going to set aside the self-inflicted security of a 'silly' pastime, opting instead for a commitment to illustration. The thing about 'just doodling' is that it cannot truly be judged, which is why I always dismissed admiration of my sketches. "They're just doodles" state I, not just for the sake of brushing off their ability to judge, but for my own self-judgement. No longer! Setting aside my apprehensions of failure, this year I'm going to go to some live-drawing classes to try and develop the skills and style that I have always wanted to achieve in illustration.

In the search for inspiration, I stumbled upon the work of the lovely Richard Haines...

I love his humble technique; loose and easy silhouettes, sprawling paint lines, and simplified details. It makes the charming character of his subjects stand out all the more. Haines keeps a blog of his extant character renderings and projects, which you may find here

Adore the whimsy and sense of play in his pieces. What a great way to keep things fresh and liven up a sober look. Sideline the stuffy sophistication, and let your long lost finger-painting, plastic-bead-bracelet-making self kick up heels every once in awhile! Who needs a midlife crisis when you've never quite left the coltish ways of kid-dom behind?

Warby Parker

Much to the exasperation of my be-speckled counterparts, I have always harbored a desire to need glasses. If that perfect pair of sunnies can complete a look out-of-doors, a great pair of prescription glasses can compliment your everyday style, rain or shine.

One embittered dismissal of my bemoaning of 20/20 vision comes in the form of "But glasses are so EX-pensive!" My recently discovered rebuttal comes in the form of online eyewear establishment Warby Parker.

Conceived by four close Wharton School grad comrades Neil Blumenthal, Andrew Hunt, Jeffrey Raider, and David Gilboa, Warby Parker is an online-only prescription eyewear retailer rebelling against "the overpriced and bland eyewear available today." Calling upon vintage-inspired styles, and giving them a fashion-forward twist, the Warby boys offer 27+ styles, each priced at...prescription nay-sayers hold your breath...$95. And it doesn't end there.

Having witnessed the overwhelming population of the visually-impaired unable to afford necessary eyewear, Warby Parker coupled up with renowned non-profits such as VisionSpring. With this partnership, the company is donating one pair of glasses to a person in need for every pair purchased from their site. Furthermore, donations to such charities allows for training in third-world countries for small business entrepreneurs, teaching them how to fabricate prescription eyewear at low cost, and therefore passing the savings along to those who previously could not afford them.

Stylish, cheap, and charitable...who could say no to glasses now? Four-eyes of the world rejoice! (And leave my far-sighted aspirations be.)

P.S.- They also did a collab with SUNO...
